Demographics

Marvin Ave Elementary School is located 9 miles west of the heart of Los Angeles, in a mixed commercial and residential area. The current demographics for this area consist of; 53% Hispanic (25,462), 36% African American (17,291), 4% Caucasian (2,127), 3% Asian (1,434), 2% American Indian (103), and 2% Mixed-race (898).  Within these demographics, 55.1% of the population speaks a language other than English in the home. 

 

The Marvin Ave. Community is composed of our Marvin Ave Community school and our Marvin Ave. Language Magnet.  Our community is comprised of Transitional Kindergarten to Fifth grade students. Special Education services include 2 (two) Special Day classes (K-2 & 3-5), 1 (one) mild to moderate Autism class (K-3) and 2 (two) Resource Specialists servicing both K-2 students and 3-5 students. Our Marvin Ave Language Magnet teaches students a foreign language using a holistic approach to language acquisition.  Students are placed in language classes according to language ability: beginning, intermediate, and advanced.  In essence, students in grades 1st-5th are intertwined to learn speaking, reading, writing, listening, culture and history.  Students and parents may choose from one of four languages to study: Spanish, French, Mandarin and Korean.
