GATE Program

GATE ProgramMarvin Avenue’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is designed to address the learning styles of students who have been identified as gifted and talented, by providing them with an enriched education. The program meets students’ intellectual needs, motivates them to reach their highest potential, and apply their critical thinking skills across domains. Differentiation is achieved through the usage of research-based strategies, including depth and complexity, and other instructional strategies beneficial for gifted students.
At Marvin, students are screened for giftedness in each GATE category. Students are automatically identified in areas of High Achievement from their high SBAC scores in both the ELA and Mathematics, or their high scores from their second grade Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT).
In addition, classroom teachers and parents may refer students for consideration by the GATE Department, which may include testing with a psychologist, a portfolio assessment, or an audition.
Parents are also provided GATE Workshops to support their children before and after gifted identification. Dates can be found in the COMMUNITY, Parent Resources, section of the school’s website. Ms. Woods is the GATE coordinator for the 2023-24 school year.
